How to Stay Healthy on Airplane Flights | VistaJet Blog
If you have plans to travel soon, you may like to know some of the best ways to maintain your physical and mental health while you’re flying. Naturally, coronavirus has put an increased focus on staying safe and healthy while traveling, but there are additional things you can do before and during your flight to ensure that you remain well.
Drink plenty of water
Because of the oxygen-thin air and lack of humidity up in the sky, it’s not uncommon to experience dehydration. And as soon as you step off a plane, headaches and fatigue can kick in. To reduce any chances of these side effects, sip on plenty of water throughout the flight. According to the Aerospace Medical Association, you should aim to drink approximately eight ounces of water for every hour you’re in the air.
Wash your hands frequently
Before getting on the plane – as well as throughout your journey – it’s vital that you wash your hands and avoid touching your face and eyes as much as possible. This will help to prevent any germs that you come into contact with from making you ill. It’s always a good idea to pop a hand sanitizer in your pocket too, so that you can put some on before eating, for example. On board a VistaJet flight, masks, gloves, and sanitizer will be provided for you.
Try to move regularly
When you’re flying, one thing you must try to do is move regularly. Longer flights can not only be slightly uncomfortable, but for some passengers with underlying health conditions, they could also possibly be dangerous. Depending on the situation and health of an individual, side effects of long-haul flights can naturally vary – but it’s better to be safe than sorry.
Travel-related deep vein thrombosis (DVT) is extremely uncommon in healthy people, but it’s important to be aware that long-distance travel can increase the chances of it.
To reduce any risks mid-air, get up regularly, stretch, and perform in-flight exercises to prevent DVT.
Get your body moving by performing these airplane exercises for long flights:
- Neck: Slowly move your head from side to side to each shoulder, ensuring that you’re taking deep breaths throughout.
- Shoulders: Lift your arms above your head, putting your palms together. Bend your elbows and drop your hands behind your head. Look up to the ceiling, slightly bending your back as you do so, and hold this position for a few seconds.
- Back: Place your hands on your knees and perform a seated cat-cow. Inhale, bringing your chest forward and look up. Exhale, rounding your spine and bringing your shoulders forward so that you’re looking at the floor.
- Legs: Raise your heels, leaving your toes on the floor. Following this, raise and lower your toes also.
- Ankles: Lift your legs up one at a time and circle your feet from the ankle. Perform this movement clockwise first, and then anticlockwise.
Aim to repeat all of the above 10-15 times every thirty minutes to one hour throughout the flight.
On one of our private aircraft, your cabin will be your home away from home, meaning you can carry these exercises out in a large, private space.
Take the time to get some rest
Are you in need of some well-deserved shuteye? If so, take some time out on the plane to relax and rest. Getting enough sleep is essential as it not only allows the mind and body to recharge, but it also helps the brain to function and the heart remain healthy.
Whether you’re traveling for work or leisure, there’s no doubt that you’d like to get some rest on the plane.
